Adult Swim's Leading New Show of This Year Secures a Significant Renewal for Two More Seasons.

In October of last year, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, not long after, the channel introduced a fresh animated series with a strikingly different tone. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. During a period often marked by dark humor, this show's wholesomeness found an audience and turned it into a breakout hit.

A Major Commitment

On December 18th, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for a further two seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to develop the story of the Campbell family. The show centers on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose central trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four central characters.

"I’m so grateful to the audience of the show who took a chance on the show and shared it with others," said Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for seasons to come."

A President's Endorsement

Accompanying the news commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He thanked the fans who embraced the show and championed its uniquely offbeat style.

"All of you supported this new show, championed for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. There’s something surprisingly comfy about observing this charming family navigate their simple existence.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa shared his goal to move the comedy genre beyond its prevailing layer of irony. He attributed this trend to various cultural shifts.

“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” explained Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we just have to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

Future Seasons

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that very evolution. Or at the very least, the renewal promises audiences a little more time to bask in the warm glow of the beloved Campbell clan.

The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The entire series is ready to watch on HBO Max.
