Arrangements for Trump-Putin Meeting Postponed Days Following Hungarian Capital Talks Suggested

Currently exist "no preparations" for US President President Trump to meet Russia's Putin "in the immediate future", a White House official has declared.

Last Thursday Trump said he and the Kremlin leader would hold talks in Hungary's capital within two weeks to address the Ukraine conflict.

A initial discussion between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and his opposite number Sergei Lavrov was planned for this week - but the White House stated the two had had a "constructive" call and that a face-to-face session was no longer "required".

The White House did not share additional specifics on the reason the negotiations had been delayed.

Previous Developments

Trump had raised the possibility of a Hungarian meeting via telephone with Putin, a day before hosting Ukraine's President Zelensky in the Oval Office.

Various sources claimed his meeting with the Ukrainian leader had been a "heated exchange", with those familiar indicating the president had urged him to relinquish extensive regions of eastern Ukraine as part of a settlement with Russia.

However, on this week the American president supported a truce plan supported by Ukraine and EU officials to pause the war on the existing battle lines.

"Let it be cut where it stands," he remarked.

Russia has frequently resisted against halting the current line of contact.

Moscow was solely focused on "enduring stability", Lavrov stated on Tuesday, suggesting that halting hostilities would merely represent a temporary ceasefire.

Negotiating Stances

The "fundamental issues" of the hostilities demanded attention, Lavrov emphasized, using Kremlin shorthand for a range of comprehensive conditions that include the acceptance of total Russian authority over the Donbas as well as the military reduction of the country – a non-starter for Kyiv and its European partners.

The Ukrainian president commented conversations concerning the battle positions were the "start of negotiations" but that Moscow was "taking all measures" to prevent dialogue.

He also said the sole subject that could make Moscow "pay attention" was that of the provision of long-range weapons to the Ukrainian military.

Weapons Discussions

Putin's spontaneous discussion with Trump last Thursday came ahead of speculation that the US was considering delivering extended-range cruise missiles to Ukrainian forces that could possibly hit inside Russia.

Zelensky stated it was the missile discussion that had compelled Moscow to engage in discussion. The conversation concerning the weapons systems had proven to be a "significant input" in diplomacy", he added.
