Venezuela Condemns US of Attack
The incumbent regime has condemned the US of an act of "imperial aggression," stating that ex- President Trump supposedly ordered military strikes against the South American country. In an official statement, the government confirmed that strikes had targeted the capital and several other regions: Miranda, La Guaira state, and Aragua state.
"The primary goal of these strikes is to gain control of our nation's strategic resources, especially its oil and resources," the statement declared.
The government appealed to the world to denounce the strikes, which it termed a "blatant breach of international law" that put numerous of civilians in danger.
Reports of Explosions and Defense Bases Hit
Locals spoke of experiencing roughly several powerful blasts around the middle of the night local time. Residents in various districts allegedly rushed into the open.
"The earth trembled. This is frightening. We experienced blasts and jets in the area," said one local.
Smoke was reported rising from major defense sites in the city: the La Carlota airbase airfield and the Fuerte Tiuna base army base, where president Nicolás Maduro is reported to reside.
Regional Reaction
The president of neighboring Colombia, wrote on social media that "Currently they are striking Caracas... bombing it with projectiles." He requested an immediate emergency session of the UN Security Council.
Colombia, which just joined the Security Council, announced it would initiate security plans at its shared border with Venezuela.
Preceding Events
These reported strikes come after a prolonged campaign of pressure by the Trump administration against the Venezuelan administration. Beginning in August, there has been a major US military presence off the country's northern coast and a series of air strikes on ships accused of illegal activities.
Venezuela's government has announced "the implementation of emergency" and commanded all national defense plans to be initiated. It has also called on its citizens to mobilize and "denounce this foreign aggression."
The White House and the US Department of Defense have not publicly addressed inquiries for comment regarding the reports.
