British Government Pulls Significant Loan for Mozambique Gas Initiative Amid Environmental and Terrorism Concerns

The UK government has canceled a contentious $1.15 bn loan backing a large-scale LNG scheme in Mozambique, after growing concerns that the venture exacerbates the climate crisis and militant attacks in the area.

Government Decision and Rationale

Business Secretary the Business Secretary stated that the UK would withdraw its backing for the Mozambique LNG project, marking five years after the deal ignited bitter criticism from campaigners over its effects on human rights, security, and the planet.

“Although these decisions are never straightforward, the government holds the view that UK funding of this scheme will not further the needs of our country,” remarked Kyle.

The move emerged as the scheme's developer, France-based energy giant TotalEnergies, is set to restart the troubled operation, which has been suspended since a deadly militant attack on a nearby community in 2021 resulted in hundreds of casualties.

History and Growing Risks

The support package was first agreed in 2020. Authorities stated they had reviewed the potential problems linked to the project and concluded they had grown markedly since that point.

At first, the UK's finance body had argued the project would create over 2,000 of UK jobs and could be “game-changing for Mozambique's economic and social progress.”

However, environmental groups have consistently contended that the east African country should be aided to channel resources more aggressively in sustainable sources to build a lasting low-carbon future.

Opposition and Calls for Wider Action

The project served as a lightning rod for violence in the area and was also accused of infringing upon the human rights of indigenous people who were moved when construction work started.

“It has been obvious for years that this project is a failure for local communities and for the environment,” commented one activist from a sustainable finance group. The campaigner called on major international banks funding the venture to end their backing, stating they “can no longer ignore the problems.”

Another prominent environmental campaigner added: “This LNG scheme is a massive carbon timebomb, connected to serious violations. It should never have been given UK taxpayer-funded backing in the first place.”

He further called for that the UK should instead assist nations like Mozambique by helping them to become resilient to the impacts of the climate crisis and put money in their rich clean energy sources.

TotalEnergies has been contacted for a statement.
