Cameroonian Opposition Figure Confronts Legal Action Over Electoral Turmoil, Authorities Announces

Election Protest in Cameroon
Many in Cameroon are furious that Paul Biya has secured an eighth presidential term

Cameroon's Minister of the Interior the interior minister has declared that opposition leader Issa Tchiroma Bakary will face legal action over accusations that he instigated "aggressive post-election demonstrations".

At least 4 protesters have been fatally wounded during clashes between police and military and protesters since the electoral process on October 12, with the 92-year-old head of state obtaining an eighth consecutive term.

The opposition leader insists that he won the election, a assertion dismissed by the governing party, the Cameroon People's Democratic Movement (CPDM).

Forceful measures by security personnel on demonstrators have alarmed the global community, with the UN, AU and European Union urging caution.

Minister's Allegations

Recently, Nji alleged the opposition figure of planning what he labeled "unauthorized" rallies resulting in the loss of lives, and also condemned him for claiming win in the presidential race.

He added that Tchiroma Bakary's "co-conspirators responsible for an subversive plot" will also undergo judicial processes.

Vote Outcome

The president, who took control in the early 80s and is now the oldest serving president, secured the October 12 election with 53.7% of the ballots, compared to a significant minority for his opponent, according to the electoral authority.

Challenger's Position

The opposition figure is remains silent to the authorities' move to prosecute him, but he had earlier announced that he refused to acknowledge a rigged election - and that he was fearless of being taken into custody.

On election result day, he said that gunmen opened fire on protesters assembled near his residence in the city of Garoua, killing at least 2 people.

Investigation Announced

On Tuesday, the interior minister disclosed that an investigation would be launched into violent incidents surrounding the declaration of the vote outcome.

"In the course of these incidents, some of the criminals died," he commented, without providing a exact count of protesters who have been fatally injured in the clashes.

Nji further mentioned that a number of personnel of the law enforcement also received serious injuries.

Current Situation

Even though Nji insisted the state of affairs across the country was now manageable, demonstrators continue to protest in various areas of the nation, especially in urban centers, where demonstrators mounted roadblocks on Tuesday, and burnt tires on the thoroughfares.

Analysts alert that the election-related unrest could push the country into a governmental instability.
