Educator Slain and Two Dozen Pupils Seized in Firefight at Educational Institution in Nigeria
Weapon-carrying attackers have fatally shot an educator and abducted at least 25 students in an raid targeting a girls' secondary school in Nigeria's northwestern region, authorities have confirmed.
The gang of attackers breached the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State at approximately 04:00 local time on the beginning of the work week, police confirmed.
The armed individuals "engaged police personnel on duty in a shootout" before breaching the school's outer barrier and seizing the students from their living quarters, according to a statement.
One member of staff was lost their life while safeguarding the students. An additional employee received firearm injuries and is now receiving treatment.
Eyewitnesses described a large group of attackers, referred to locally as criminal elements, who came shooting randomly to cause panic.
Local residents disclosed to media that the armed men then led a group of female students into surrounding rural areas.
The police said they had deployed "additional police tactical units, together with army members and local protection units" to the area.
A coordinated search and rescue operation is underway in surrounding forests and suspected escape routes.
In recent years, educational institutions in Nigeria's north have become frequent targets for weapon-carrying factions, who often carry out abductions to demand financial compensation or gain negotiating power with authorities.
The incident in Kebbi State underscores the continuing safety emergency troubling the locality, leaving families in Maga in a state of fearful exhaustion as they expect and desire their daughters' safe return.
Protection challenge in the northern regions of Nigeria has worsened considerably in recent months, with educational institutions bearing the brunt of the conflict.
