EU Finance Leaders Gather to Debate Unlocking €140 Billion in Frozen Moscow's Assets for Kyiv Funding
European Union economic leaders are gathering in Brussels this Thursday to tackle the union's financial priorities, including the increasingly urgent issue of financial support to Ukraine.
Ukraine's President States Country's Existence Relies on Partners
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated in a recent discussion that Ukraine's existence depended on obtaining additional financial aid from allies.
“I hope, God bless, they will approve the necessary funding,” he stated to reporters. Otherwise, “It will be necessary to seek another solution, it’s a question of our surviving. That’s why it is essential urgently. We rely on partners.”
European Authorities Advocates €140 Billion Reparations Loan
The European Commission still hopes to convince member states – including Belgium, that continues to bloc the proposal due to legal fears – to proceed with a €140bn reparations loan using Moscow's immobilized funds.
EU chief Ursula von der Leyen emphasized this morning that this represents “the optimal method to support Kyiv's military and national finances.”
Resolution Delayed Until Year-End Meeting
A definitive resolution on the matter has been deferred till the EU leaders’s summit in December, with the funding required at the start of the coming year.
Discussions Occur Amid Corruption Scandal in Ukraine
But the talks are happening during a tricky moment for Ukraine, as the president had to move to address growing public outrage in Ukraine over a corruption scandal in the energy sector, dismissing two ministers who are accused of participating in a extensive corruption network.
Danish finance leader Stephanie Lose was questioned on her reaction to the allegations, and affirmed that there was determination to keep aiding Ukraine.
“Of course, The country will have to continuously work with improvements, strengthening all parts of the nation [and] that also applies to anti-corruption … but there shouldn’t be any doubt that there’s a strong European support behind Ukraine,” she said.
Additional European Events Under Watch
In other news, observers will be monitoring Holland where the legislature meets to discuss possible directions in the government formation process, Rome-Tirana discussions in the Italian capital offering the most recent opportunity to enjoy the remarkable Meloni-Rama dynamics, and a series of top-tier meetings throughout the continent, including Nato’s Mark Rutte’s trip to a German airbase.
Much to report on.
