American flight controllers are more and more seeking second jobs and reporting ill, as they remain on duty without pay amid the federal closure, the transport chief has announced.

"These professionals are becoming strained," the official told a news outlet on Sunday, as some flights were grounded on the Californian coast due to staffing shortages.

After the federal closure on October 1st, air traffic controllers, who are considered essential workers, were told to keep doing their duties without pay.

But some have been absent, leading terminals to stop or slow their flight operations, which has added to delays caused by weather and additional factors.
