Boxing is in a real slump this period, with limited compelling matchups and considerably fewer thrilling fights than typical. The possibility of a serious and intriguing heavyweight battle between Joseph Parker and Wardley at the iconic O₂ Arena provides some solace to the beleaguered business. The victor will very likely face Oleksandr Usyk next year. In contrast, the loser is probably going to mourn the inevitable erosion of their gained recognition.

The low-key appeal of both men is strengthened by the fact that they now find themselves at the brink of a chance at a world title. Yet neither is invincible. This is the 40th contest for Parker and, apart from three losses, he has been knocked down on several occasions by multiple challengers. He consistently rises but Wardley hits harder than any opponent he's encountered – with the exclusion of Wilder who looked a shell of a power puncher when Parker secured a clear unanimous decision in late 2023.

Wardley, who began in white-collar boxing, who only started boxing when he was 20 years old, had zero amateur background and has consistently faced doubts about his comparatively limited skills. But he is similarly close to a shot at the title.

“This is the biggest bout, currently, in the heavyweight division. These two boxers have accepted the challenge when neither of them needed to make this fight. Joe Parker is the interim champion and they have already ordered Usyk to fight him, but the Ukrainian was hurt. Parker wants to fight anyway.

“Fabio is also in an excellent situation and he could have just waited for his opportunity. He said ‘No, thanks.’ He desired to compete – and with Parker because it gives him a chance to skip the line.”

Parker’s Perspective

Parker, set to be 34 in January, said: “It's win or go home. I am not thinking about losing. I respect my opponent and what he has done and his preparation for this fight. But I am on a superior tier and I am intending to prove it on the day of the bout.”

Wardley's Stance

Wardley will be 31 in December, and he said: “It's a huge evening for the pair of us. It is undoubtedly the largest contest of my boxing journey and the greatest challenge I've faced. But each time I rise to the occasion I excel under pressure. The upcoming fight will be no different. The divide between where Joe is and my perceived standing has been a common theme throughout my career.

“He has vast experience for a extended duration, with a numerous contests on his resume. By no means is he an aged fighter but he has been in the boxing world for a while and had some heavy fights. I’ve been in a few wars myself and I realize they cause wear and tear. He has been in a far greater number of those compared to me.”

The Ultimate Prediction

But the suspicion remains that Parker is likely to be too veteran, and too technically proficient, for his opponent. He should win a grueling encounter with the belief that he is the leading contender for the champion Usyk – still the world’s best heavyweight by a comfortable distance.
