Larian Studios Clarifies Its Application of AI Tools for Next Divinity

The studio behind acclaimed role-playing games like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin recently shown its upcoming project, creating significant excitement within the player base. However, subsequent comments from the company's co-founder have introduced clarity to the narrative, addressing the studio's philosophy toward machine learning.

Augmenting Workflows, Not Cutting Jobs

In a recent message, Swen Vincke explained that the developer is employing AI technology for particular ancillary functions. These encompass fleshing out pitch decks, creating early-stage artistic references, and creating temporary copy.

Importantly, Vincke stressed that the shipping material in the game will be authored exclusively by actual artists. "We are writing everything manually," he stated.

We are actively expanding our team of writers and are currently forming dedicated writer rooms.

Since this area is being specifically called out — we presently have 23 concept artists and have roles to fill for more talent.

Each initiative we do is additive and focused on having people spend greater focus on making content.

Any machine learning application implemented properly is additive to a developer's process, never a stand-in for their craft.

Addressing Concerns and Clarifying the Vision

The admission of AI usage initially sparked unease among portions of the player base. In reaction, Vincke offered more elaboration on online platforms.

"At Larian, we employ AI tools to explore references, just like we use the internet and physical media," he wrote. "During the initial brainstorming phase we use it as a basic framework for structure which we then swap out with authentic artwork."

He noted, "We've hired artists for their creative vision, not for their ability to follow what a AI generates."

Key Areas of AI Integration

Vincke had previously detailed the team's focused method to AI and ML, defining its use into three main pillars:

  • Automation of Tedious Tasks: This encompasses polishing mocap data, voice editing, and pipeline-specific tasks like adapting animations for different models.
  • Fast-Tracked Experimentation: Using systems to speedily create basic versions of mechanics to experiment with concepts prior to complete development.
  • Future Potential for Gameplay: Researching how machine learning could one day enhance innovative player agency, particularly in creating dynamic reactions in a detailed game universe.

He clearly affirmed that key artistic disciplines — such as music composition — are not fields where the team is cutting creative involvement. Conversely, Larian is actively hiring in these very positions.

"We are not releasing a game with machine-made assets, and we are certainly not considering reducing staff to swap them out with artificial intelligence," Vincke summarized.
