Manchester United Poised to Sign German Striker Lea Schüller from the Bavarian Giants

The Women's Super League club are finalising sealing the deal for prolific German striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move from Bayern Munich.

A Marquee Signing for United

Schüller, who has six months left on her deal, is known as a consistent goal-getter for her club and the national team. Having scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 caps for her country. Her arrival will be seen as a marquee coup for the WSL team.

Her exit from Munich has been anticipated since she was seen fighting back tears while applauding the club's supporters after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.

It was reported in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its top forwards. According to multiple sources, all the paperwork for the transfer are now finalised.

Reliable Goalscoring to Strengthen United's Forward Line

The 28-year-old’s arrival is expected to provide a major uplift to United’s forward line. She has been remarkably consistent with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.

  • For seven straight seasons, up to and including the last term, she achieved at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
  • She won the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.

Building Momentum at Old Trafford

Securing Schüller’s signature comes at a time when the club appear to be gathering positive momentum.

Their recent performances include securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.

In the transfer market, the mid-season window has brought additional activity:

  1. The signing of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
  2. The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since joining in 2023.

Regarding the midfielder's extension, a club official stated: “Miyazawa is now a critical component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill enables her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”

Lundkvist, who has arrived from a side from the American league, said: “You can feel how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
