Based on freedom of information figures, more than two thousand minors who were either exploited or arrived in the UK by themselves to apply for protection went missing from protective services last year.

Report Reveals Alarming Figures

A report titled “Until Harm Ends” sent FoI requests to children’s services departments across the United Kingdom.

Data from one hundred thirty-five local authorities indicated that out of two thousand three hundred thirty-five young people categorized as having been exploited or believed to be trafficking victims, eight hundred sixty-four (thirty-seven percent) were listed as disappeared.

Overall one hundred forty-one local authorities answered questions about solo young asylum applicants in their care, who totaled eleven thousand nine hundred ninety-nine minors. Of these, one thousand five hundred one (thirteen percent) were recorded as vanished.

High Risk for Vulnerable Young People

The study, published by advocacy groups, alerts that these groups are at “extremely elevated danger” of going missing from care.

Some trafficked children in the UK are local residents while others are from other countries.

They are likely to have been subjected to either sexual exploitation or criminal exploitation, for example by county lines gangs.

Institutional Deficiencies in Care

Municipal councils have a statutory duty to safeguard and support victimized and solo young people under minor welfare structures. Nevertheless, there is no published central government data on the issue.

The recent study cautions that elements such as uncertain legal status can increase young people’s vulnerability to continued risk, placing them at significant risk of re-victimization and continued manipulation.

Demands for Action

It says there is a “ongoing and major shortcoming” in protection and appeals to local authorities and police to ensure adherence to proper procedures.

The authors also urge the National Education Department to make certain all victimized and solo young people can obtain suitable housing that protects them from being re-victimized.

Lodging Problems

Since September 2021, local authorities have been obligated to make certain that all looked-after children under sixteen are located in arrangements that give protection.

Nevertheless, 16- and 17-year-olds can still be accommodated in so-called “supported accommodation” that does not provide daily supervision.

Under special conditions, these teenagers can be assigned to hostels, trailers, camping structures, boats, or shared housing with non-family members.

Administration Statement

An official representative commented: “The current administration assumed a minor protection structure not meeting the requirements of the country’s most vulnerable children.

“Our major minor protection and schooling act is the most substantial restructuring of children’s social care in a generation, fulfilling our mission to sever the connection between young people’s origins and their future success.”

The representative stated further that the actions include improving the access of care placements, enhanced data exchange, mandating the establishment of collaborative minor protection units in every area, and implementing a new duty on partners to automatically include learning and care environments in their safeguarding arrangements to help prevent children being overlooked.
