New York Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Shooting
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the player will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York early Sunday morning.
Glenn noted that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “positive” during a recent discussion.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and child, they are doing well and he will come through this without issue.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where his condition is described as in critical but steady condition.
“Don’t know just yet,” he added. “However, I can share, just talking to him, his attitude was encouraging. Furthermore, that’s what gives me comfort, that he feels like that and his words reflect that optimism.”
Authorities issued surveillance images Monday of a man sought in the incident involving Boyd. A motive for the shooting remains under investigation and authorities said it remains uncertain if Boyd was singled out. No other injuries were reported.
The attack took place around 2 a.m. on Sunday about halfway between MSG and Times Square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was transported to Bellevue Hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, police said. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn shared Boyd has occupied his thinking “constantly” since learning of the incident. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse recently welcomed a baby.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he has a new baby,” Glenn said. “I thought of his spouse, worrying about his newborn and my priority is his well-being. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There’s a process to this, which I won’t get into, but I am pleased that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd did not participate this season, his first with the Jets, after his season was cut short due to injury on August 18 with an injury to his shoulder that needed an operation.
He joined the Jets as a new signing in March and was projected as a significant contributor of an improved special teams group under the coach and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. But Boyd was injured during a practice session on early August and was taken away on a cart.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad throughout the season while healing from his surgery.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn commented. “I mean, he is a regular at our matches. He is completely involved. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, played his first four seasons with Minnesota after his selection in the later rounds by the Vikings out of Texas University in the 2019 draft. He signed with Arizona in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad subsequently. Boyd signed a one-year contract worth $1.6m with New York in March.
