An extensive industrial zone situated on the outskirts of Jakarta is dealing with nuclear contamination after a government team found traces of the hazardous isotope Caesium-137 at 22 manufacturing plants inside the site, which includes companies shipping chilled marine products.

Urgent Response and Product Withdrawal

The finding has led to emergency cleanup efforts and the relocation of nearby inhabitants, coming after a comparable contamination scare in the United States that was linked to the Jakarta facilities.

An important international store chain is among the businesses that have withdrawn products from its stores after the discovery.

Probe and Detection of Pollution

Indonesian authorities initiated an investigation when the American FDA identified Caesium-137, a radioactive substance, in a consignment of chilled breaded prawns sent by a local company.

Officials issued an advisory advising distributors and retailers to discard the product and not sell it, although the detected amount was far below the agency's action threshold. It added that the amount of Caesium-137 it had detected would not present an immediate risk to consumers.

The FDA explained: “The main impact on health of concern following longer term, ongoing small amount contact (eg through eating of contaminated products or water over time) is an increased chance of the disease, resulting from harm to DNA within living cells.”

Extensive Pollution and Health Examinations

Radioactivity scans showed at least 22 plants in the manufacturing area were affected. The Indonesian taskforce did not name the twenty-one other manufacturing sites, but confirmed they would immediately receive cleanup processes carried out by Indonesia's atomic energy authority.

The environment minister stated that people living in strongly polluted areas would be moved until the location was cleaned, adding that the safety of the residents was the “main concern”.

Health officials also performed checks on local workers and residents located close to the industrial zone, finding nine people who tested positive for contact to Caesium-137. They were sent to a hospital before being allowed to go back.

Decontamination and Isolation Measures

The contaminated sites will right away receive decontamination operations by Indonesia's nuclear institute. Authorities have also selected the area of a scrap metal plant as an containment center for polluted materials.
