The Details Known About the Victims of the Bondi Shooting

At least 16 people lost their lives and over 40 were wounded when assailants shot at a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an incident local police have labeled a act of terrorism.

As of the newest reports, officials have confirmed the number of fatalities is 16, including one of the alleged gunmen. Additionally, 42 wounded individuals were transported to hospital.

The victims have not yet been publicly named, but police believe their ages are between 10 and 87 years of age.

Below are the individuals who are known to date.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Known as a father of five children, he worked as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.

She described the moments leading up to the attack, saying they had been standing together when the gunfire began. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later moved to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

In a statement, a senior official declared that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the message read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was among those killed in the incident, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, many are still receiving treatment, with several in critical condition. The injured comprise two officers who responded to the attack.

A casualty is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Described as a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. It has been reported he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.

In a message, he recounted the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He stated he believed it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the attack. He told reporters he heard “a large number” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
