The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Renowned for Creating Looks for Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
Antony Price, the influential UK-based designer who crafted some of the most iconic looks worn by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has sadly died at 80 years old.
His reputation was built on his defined forms and theatrical styles, most notably the pastel suits that appeared in rock band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "their hit Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance across their platforms."
His passing follows less than a month after he debuted his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. The performer Lily Allen showcased a dress that paid homage to the iconic black velvet "dress" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.
An Enduring Influence
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London at the start of the 1960s to attend the renowned Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he commenced his career designing clothing for men at the company Stirling Copper and was the creator of the form-fitting, button-fly pants that rock legend Mick Jagger sported during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show was launched by outfits on supermodel Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the wedding dress Price designed for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A key creative partner of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price designed the iconic jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to blend menswear and womenswear along with his expert craftsmanship in designing form-fitting garments established him as a "genuine original," in the words of the UK's fashion authority.
In the 1990s, he commenced designing ensembles for Camilla, now Queen Consort, including several ensembles for her US tour after assuming the title.
After a career spanning more than five decades, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London just last month in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.
