The Golden State is Entirely Drought-Free for the First Time in Two and a Half Decades.

Following 25 long years, every region of the state is facing water scarcity. This significant achievement arrives after difficult years marked by a lack of precipitation that intensified wildfire risks and strained its enormous farming industry.

A Chart Reveals No Abnormally Dry Areas

A recent update from the national drought tracker confirmed that the entire state is without any level of drought. This development came after weeks of above-normal rainfall that replenished major reservoirs like Oroville and Shasta far beyond their historic averages.

“For anyone 25 or under you’ve always lived in a world where California has been entering or recovering from drought,” noted a local meteorologist.

Following Powerful Weather to Soggy Celebrations

The path to this point featured severe and lethal winter storms that battered the state in 2023, resulting in extensive inundation, blackouts, and fatalities. Even though those events helped ease the drought, they fell short of ending it.

Until late December, regions like the state's northeast corner were deemed abnormally dry. Substantial precipitation at the beginning of January finally erased those final dry conditions.

The Vital Sierra Snow Is Below Average

But, experts warn that drought-free conditions is not the same as having no water worries. Recent measurements of the mountain snow accumulation place it at only about 70% of the historical norm.

This snowpack, which provides about a third of the state's usable water as it melts in the spring, is a critical factor for future water availability. Hydrology managers stress that it is too early to draw conclusions for the annual water supply.

“The trend we’re looking at right now is more rain than snow,” commented a hydrology section chief. “The goal is the snow accumulation to improve by 1 April so that we’re closer to average.”

While the drought map shows a clean slate, the next challenge is to maintaining this positive water situation during the rest of the year.
