Two Separate Cuba-Headed Aid Vessels Declared Lost after Leaving Mexico.
A large-scale search and recovery effort is actively under way in the Caribbean waters for two missing sailboats loaded with aid cargo traveling from Mexico to Cuba.
Military Rescue Missions Launched
Mexico has dispatched navy personnel and military search aircraft to locate the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were had on board at least nine total sailors, per a navy statement.
The boats had been scheduled to reach Havana on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been no communication from them and zero verification of their docking, the statement clarified.
The Situation of Relief to Cuba
The island nation has relied heavily on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over the past few weeks, as the nation struggles through repeated national electricity failures.
"The crews and captains are veteran seafarers, and each boat are fitted with proper navigational gear and signalling equipment," an official involved in the effort said.
The nine-person crew are citizens of the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Mexico said it has been in touch with rescue coordination centers from the involved countries along with their embassy officials.
"Our team is co-operating fully with the relevant authorities and remain confident in the ability of the crews to make it to Cuba without incident," the official further stated.
Earlier Aid Delivery
Earlier in the week, the Cuban government warmly welcomed and greeted with fanfare a different ship that had delivered 14 tons of donated goods to the nation.
That boat, dubbed "a modern Granma" after the boat in which Fidel Castro returned to Cuba to start the Cuban Revolution in the 1950s, brought solar panels, medicines, infant formula, bikes and provisions.
Broader Political Climate
Volunteers and NGOs have primarily led initiatives to ship humanitarian aid to Cuba beginning in January, when a oil sanctions on the island nation began.
Global bodies have since warned of ""severe" supply shortages, with more than fifty thousand surgeries cancelled in Cuba due to power shortages.
Foreign policy measures have been ramped up over the past months, with remarks from several officials highlighting the complex nature of relations.
In response to certain proposals, a senior official from Cuba declared that "the socialist system of Cuba is non-negotiable."
Indications suggest that initial phases of talks commenced, although their present status remains uncertain.
The maritime authorities affirmed it was committed to using every available asset at its command to find the sailboats and guarantee the safety of the people on board.
As of now, there has been no official comment on the disappeared vessels by the government in Havana.
