On his initial day in office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reinvent” the metropolis, promising “a fresh chapter” and an ambitious start to his tenure.

A Groundbreaking Figure

The young figure, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor born in Africa. He additionally marked a milestone by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A time such as this comes rarely and rarer still is it that the citizens whose grasp the levers of change,” Mamdani stated.

Defying advice to temper hopes, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will govern expansively and audaciously.”

Adhering to Socialist Convictions

Mamdani openly embraced his core beliefs. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not abandon my ideals for concern of being called radical,” he said to rapturous applause.

The inauguration was a two-part event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's election as a victory over the status quo.

A Costly Blueprint

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a plan featuring:

• Subsidized daycare
• Fare-free public buses
• A halt to rent increases for nearly 1 million households
• A pilot of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion price tag of these services may be challenging to finance. Mamdani has vowed to raise taxes on the richest residents and big business. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating Political Headwinds

The new mayor also faces skepticism from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past comments.

Mamdani has sought to address these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was reportedly unexpectedly cordial.

The Basic Challenges of Governing

In the end, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in providing essential functions: sanitation, reducing the rodent problem, repairing potholes, and making sure smooth transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's anti-crime efforts, citing historically low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his remarks with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
